What is activated charcoal?

Activated charcoal also known as activated carbon is a fine black powder obtained by superheating natural sources of carbon, such as wood, bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal, olive pits or sawdust. It is used in water filters, medicines that remove toxins from the body, and in chemical purification processes.

In case of food poisoning, the black powder stops toxins from being absorbed in the stomach by binding to them.

What are the benefits of activated charcoal for the skin?

  1. Balances oily skin
  2. Brightens skin
  3. Detoxifies the skin
  4. Removes blackheads and gently exfoliates skin
  5. Remove toxins and other impurities from the skin
  6. Tightens pores and smoothes skin

How to use activated charcoal in your skincare routine?

Activated charcoal can be used in combination with differents types of clay for treating oily, dry, sensitive and acne-prone skin

Pure activated charcoal is extremely drying to your skin and it’s important that you use other ingredients that will moisturize and nourish your skin together with activated charcoal.

Making homemade masks is not only money-saving but it is a safer way to control the ingredients that go into your skincare products especially if you have a sensitive skin.

Since I like to experiment a lot with different ingredients found in my kitchen, I decided to create these 3 amazing skincare recipes that include activated charcoal, green clay, Moroccan red clay and an amazing ingredient, cocoa powder!
